Art for Allyship
A Workshop
We often hear from artists who want to use their gifts to support the Timpanogos, but who are looking for direction or guidance. So, we’ve decided to put together a training. We’re grateful that Nic Jacobsen, of Unsettling Mormonism, has agreed to bring his expertise on these subjects to bear here, and join us as a facilitator.
Art for Allyship is the online training we are offering together at the end of the month.
This training is for settler-descended artists who want to support Indigenous communities, including but not limited to the Timpanogos. In this workshop, we’ll discuss how art can contribute to cultural change, exploring both its limitations and its strengths. We’ll learn about best practices for addressing historic violence, the importance of audience and optics, and how to build shame resilience and strong ethics.
Participants will reflect on what makes art effective, and examine successes and challenges from real-world projects, including recent community exhibitions. Facilitators include Nic Jacobsen from Unsettling Mormonism, and Hester Murdock, from Acknowledge.
This class will be free to attend, but donations will be invited afterwards. All the money we raise will go towards sending a representative of the Timpanogos Nation to a training on cultural healing later this year.
If you’re new to this conversation, or if you’d like to sharpen your skills, please apply to join us! Art for Allyship will be held on Saturday, March 28th at 6:30 pm MST. If you’d like to join us, please fill out this Google Form and we’ll get back to you.
Warmly,
Anna + Hester
